Tareque Masud

Tareque Masud (1956–2011) was the defining figure of Bangladesh’s independent cinema, working almost entirely outside the Dhaka studio system. He co-directed Muktir Gaan (1995) with Catherine Masud, assembling unused 1971 war footage into a documentary that drew record audiences. His debut feature Matir Moina (2002), drawn from his own madrasa childhood, won the FIPRESCI Prize in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes and became Bangladesh’s first Academy Award submission. He died in a road accident in 2011 while scouting locations.
