Soumendu Roy (1932–2023) began as Subrata Mitra’s assistant and took over as Satyajit Ray’s cinematographer from Teen Kanya (1961) onward, ultimately shooting twenty-two of Ray’s films including Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, Aranyer Din Ratri and Hirak Rajar Deshe. He won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography three times and also worked extensively with Tapan Sinha and Tarun Majumdar.
