Kabir Suman, born Suman Chattopadhyay in 1949, transformed Bengali popular song in 1992 with the album Tomake Chai, effectively founding the jibonmukhi gaan movement. He won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for Srijit Mukherji’s Jaatishwar, a film built around the nineteenth-century Portuguese-Bengali songwriter Antony Firingee; the score drew on period Bengali forms including kobigaan.
